Mystic Pizza
Oyster boat - Mystic Seaport
By 9:00 am we were leaving Newport Harbor - heading 50 miles up the North Shore of the Sound to
Mystic, Connecticut.  There were some fairly good sized rollers coming in off of the Atlantic and we were glad to be going down wind.  It was good to be back out on the water.
As we approached the entrance to Mystic River an old sailing ship with her sails up came into view .....
they are magnificent vessels, especially when they are underway.  Mystic River is a beautiful stretch of water with classic homes, brick warehouses and white churches lining its banks.  We assume all the boats on the hard will be on that water soon.
The afternoon was spent at Mystic Seaport, the nation's leading maritime museum.  Its waterfront features tall ships and other historic vessels that you can climb aboard and explore.  It is home to four National Historic Landmark vessels - including the Charles W. Morgan.
At the preservation shipyard we watched skilled craftsmen restore the Morgan, the last wooden whale ship in the world.  It is fascinating stuff.
We then rode our bicycles to the town of Mystic in search of Mystic Pizza, made famous by the 1988 movie by the same name.  It has become somewhat of a cult-classic film and besides, we were hungry.
The recipe for the pizza has remained the same and we were reminded that back then there wasn't such a thing as a "brick oven" gourmet pie.  Since we don't remember much about the movie except that
Old Sailing Ship
Julia Roberts is very young, we might need to download it from i-store.
